Inexpensive Hurricane Preparedness

Here in Central Florida, summertime means storm season. It never fails that a huge storm will come out of nowhere, but luckily we are here to help you avoid the element of surprise.

At Check on Hold, we want to give you some inexpensive ways to get prepared ahead of time-around the house and with your finances. Read on to see some of our tips!

Shop for pantry basics next time you’re at the store

You don’t always have to go out of your way to get prepared ahead of time. Next time you are checking off your grocery list, consider picking up some of the basics that will get you and your family through an upcoming storm.

So your bill doesn’t become too costly- pick up generic brands of bottled water, canned goods, flashlights, and batteries. Most grocery stores even carry some games or activities for kids and pets to keep busy. These items seem simple but will go a long way during storms.

Keep your outdoor areas clean and secure

This is something you can get the whole family involved in, it may take some time but costs nearly nothing!

Start by picking up toys, furniture, and objects around the outside perimeter of your home and place them in a secure area (screened in porch or garage). Next, check shrubs and trees for loose or dying branches, you want to make sure nothing can fly into your windows, cars, or outdoor appliances.

Homes aren't always secured with hurricane shutters, so for a more reasonable solution cut some plywood and board up your windows (and any other space that can be broken or damaged by heavy wind gusts).

Getting the small things out of the way ahead of time will make you feel less stressed and more secure when a large storm comes.

Create emergency supply kits

We all know the worse the hurricane is, the better chance of businesses and banks closing- and what we don’t know is- for how long. This is the perfect time to get your finances in line before it’s too late.

Get a water-compatible container to store your important documents in: birth certificates, insurance policies, mortgages, checks, bank statements, etc. If you use checks, order more, and if you don’t use checks purchase some money orders to have on hand. Unfortunately, as the power may stop, the bills don’t, so have a couple payment options available before the storm hits.

At Check on Hold, we want to help make your planning process as easy as possible. We are always here to provide you with a service that will solve a potential problem. Come into one of our locations today for cash advances, money orders, or prepaid debit cards. We look forward to seeing you!
